We are pleased to report on another successful Shorinji Kempo demonstration at the 33rd annual Powell Street Festival. Members from Vancouver's Trout lake dojo, University of BC dojo, and Coquitlam's Tozenji dojo joined forces to display our Way for the crowd.
The Powell Street Festival is the longest running community arts festival in the lower mainland, celebrating Japanese-Canadian culture. There is something for everyone, with highlights such as Japanese festival food, dancing, music, souvenirs, omikoshi, and arts. Of course, martial arts play a large role in the festival, with demonstrators from several different styles over the course of the festival.
This year the festival was held at a new location. Oppenheimer Park , the park used in previous years, was unavailable due to construction conflicts. Woodland Park was chosen for the location this year, and proved to be a beautiful and suitable substitute for Oppenheimer Park . The members of the clubs had no problems adjusting to the new location, and the demonstration was a great success.
This year marks the 27th consecutive time our club has demonstrated at the festival. We thank all those involved and hope to continue this tradition in the future.
