Shorinji Kempo Group
Reports from WSKO Branches
Alberta Branch, Canada / Oct 2003
Contributor: Onno Kok

A Group Embu started off the demonstartions
Community Celebration.

The Alberta Branch's Dojo is located inside the Briar Hill / Hundsfield Heights Community centre in Calgary. Over the years we have helped the community in various ways from biannual cleanups to volunteering for community fund raisers.

We helped the community raise enough money to build a new community centre, where we now hold our practices.

More from the whole group.
Recently the community association had it's 50th anniversary celebration. To help raise awareness of the Shorinji Kempo group within the community, we held a demonstration at the evening festivities.

Along with some wonderful Kumi Embu, we also added a little comedy and showed some self defence techniques against a
bad guy ( me ). When performing Kumi Embu in front of many people who are not familiar with Shorinji Kempo it is always interesting to hear their reactions. The children in the front rows made great "oooooooooo", "aahhhhhhhh", and "Ouch!" sounds when there were nage techniques.

Several of the branch members stayed after the demonstration and volunteered to help with the rest of the party.

Noda-sensei and Doug Simpson.
