Members from Vancouver Branch, BC Tozenji Branch, and UBC Branch met yet again for the annual New Yearfs practice, also known as hatsugeiko. This year marks the 27th consecutive time that Shorinji Kempo kenshi have met on the first day of the year to start it out with a big kiai!
Sensei Masaaki Hashimoto and Sensei Masa Okuma started the tradition way back in 1985. During the opening greeting, Sensei Okuma noted "I remember when we first started, it was just the two of us, me and Hashimoto Sensei. Now there are over 40 of us here. Its amazing!"
After an opening kumi embu, a vigorous warm up and basics, we headed outside for the traditional 1000 punches. Everyone completed all 1000 without stopping. We were all inspired by the determination and energy that the children showed us.
The food and conversation and the after party was a treat as usual, and all of the members enjoyed the efforts of the preparation. Thank you!
