Shorinji Kempo Embu at "Japan Friends Day" in Gold Coast

Ayano, Reina & Marika Tobi Ren Geri
The Gold Coast Japan Club held its annual "Japan Friends Day" on Sunday, October 12th. This event was held in the community center of the Robina Town Shopping Centre crowded with 5,000 people in total.

Japanese residents in the city opened stalls of "okonomiyaki," shaved ice, second-hand cloths and others on the square in front of the event site. Australian residents also came to enjoy visiting the shops.

The event hall, with seating capacity of 2,000 audience, introduced various traditional Japanese cultures and other Asian countries with which Australia has friendly relationship, for 20 minutes each all day. Performance of koto (Japanese harp), shigin (poem recitation), traditional dances of Japan, the Philippines, and Indonesia, and several martial arts were presented on the stage.

There were four martial art groups performed on the stage this year. The students of Wing Chun Academy, where the students learn kung-fu (Wing Chun techniques) while learning speaking English, and the members of Gojuryu Kenseikai that has shown good performances at championships of recent years in Australia, showed their model embu. Seiyushin Karate Dojo, that became independent from Kyokushinkai, performed their embu and broke an ice pillar and a bat. We, the Shorinji Kempo Gold Coast Branch also performed our embu.

Kenshi Peter McRoberts contributed to the Shorinji Kempo embu demonstration with his good explanation that was well received. Spontaneous embu, appropriate explanations, and our good behaviors were accepted by the audience and met with great applause. Several Australian visitors made inquiries after the demonstration. I anticipate new members in the near future.
