2012 New Years Day Practice Vancouver B.C Canada

The three branches of British Columbia; Vancouver, B.C. Tozenji, and U.B.C., came together on New Years Day 2012 to celebrate in a Shorinji Kempo way.

Started by two kenshi; Vancouver Branch Master Hashimoto Sensei and B.C. Tozenji Branch Master Okuma Sensei, in a back yard twenty eight years ago the New Years Day practice has blossomed into a to small festival.

Thirty eight kenshi and their family members attended this yearfs practice. After a warm-up, meditation and a bit of kihon we all went out to the parking lot of the Tozenji temple and formed a ring. With Hashimoto Sensei taking the lead we started punching. Our goal was One Thousand Jodan Furiko Zuki. We went around the circle three times and put our actual total over our goal. Everyone had a chance to take count. It was great fun and a few of the parents of the youth class even joined in. There were smiles, sweat, and kiai. By the end, grins all around, we could barely lift our arms.

Then the feasting began. While we were punching away outside a beautiful spread was laid out by some of our family members inside. With plenty of cheer to go around it set the tone for another great year in the Shorinji Kempo community. We start the year with hard work and friendship and carry that ethic through.

The Tozenji temple where we have our dojo was also having an open house so we were able to extend our warmth to visitors of the temple and the children were able to ring the temple bell to bring in the New Year. The kenshi of British Columbia wish everyone a prosperous new year and we look forward to visits from many of you at the upcoming Taikai in September.
