Shorinji Kempo was brought to Indonesia by some Indonesian students who were studying at a university in Japan in 1960's. They had studied Shorinji Kempo and brought its philosophy and techniques back to Indonesia. There they soon formed an organization, which has been developed into a nation wide federation, comprising all the 27 provinces, more than 100,000 registered members in 170 branches, and 640 dojos. The Indonesian Federation is the second largest national federation of Shorinji Kempo after Japan.

Vice President Indra Kartasasmita, praising Kenshi for their success |
In the Indonesian Federation, a kenshi of 1st Kyu is required to have experience teaching juniors in order to take the grading exam for 1st Dan. WSKO Director (Vice President of the Indonesian Federation) explains, "If you cannot teach and take care of your juniors, you do not deserve a black belt. We do not want people who want to be strong just for themselves."
The Indonesian Federation is also called "PERKEMI," which means "brothers" in the Indonesian language. The idea of "ji ta kyoraku," -making yourself and others happy at the same time- forms the basis of this federation.
