Cancellation of the 2009 Shorinji Kempo World Taikai in Bali, Indonesia

The year 2009 is the year we had planned to hold the World Taikai of Shorinji Kempo we have held every four years.

The World Shorinji Kempo Organization had been preparing for the 2009 Shorinji Kempo World Taikai in Bali, Indonesia. However, after the terrorist bombings in Jakarta, capital city of Indonesia, occurred on July 17, we concluded that we were not confident of the safety in Bali, and cancelled the World Taikai at the last minute.

It was and is still very painful for us to think of how this cancellation disappointed the Indonesian Federation members, who have been involved in the preparation, the participants who had planned to perform in the World Taikai, and all our supporters. However, we would like to ask you to understand that we had to make this hard decision, giving the highest priority to human lives, after collecting all information we were able to gather.

There were people who arrived in Bali even though the Taikai was cancelled. The Indonesian Federation organized the Shorinji Kempo Embu Exchange Gathering on July 25th, as well as other events. We are happy to report that all the participants returned to their home countries without serious problems.
