Shorinji Kempo Summer Training Camp at Headquarters, Week B

Week B of the Shorinji Kempo Headquarters Summer Training Camp was held for 4 days from August 10th to 13th, 2010, attended by 208 students from 19 Japanese universities, 9 from Portugal, 7 from Spain, 2 from Holland, 12 from the U.K., one from New Zealand, and one from the U.S.A.

Japan is experiencing the record heat this summer, and the camp started in a very humid and hot weather, with the opening drumbeats and chinkon-gyo.

From Portugal, three branch masters Mr. Fausto Augusto Carrco (Oriental Branch), Ms. Cristina Maria Carrico (Aljustrel Branch), and Mr. Jose Antonio Araujo (Sintra Branch), brought their branch members, who were eagerly taking notes when instructors were explaining. The branch masters have visited Japan several times so far and have good friends to visit.

Mr. Eduardo Noriega Gandara is the Branch Master of the Spain's Donostia Branch. He has been teaching the branch since 1993. One of the branch kenshi, Mr. Fuan Armenteros Balza, passed the 4th Dan test. Mr. Jose Maria Arjona was another Spanish participant from the Malaka Branch.

From Holland, Mr. Anton Eliens and Mr. Marcos Gil Medeiros Daniel traveled to Hombu to join the camp and take the 3rd Dan test together. They were warmly welcomed by Hombu instructors who practiced with them when the instructors visited Amsterdam in the Japan Budo Delegation last year.

Mr. Peter Miller from the Auckland Branch of New Zealand and Mr. Bobby Sturgeon from the Mt. Diablo Branch of the U.S.A. traveled alone and met with many fellow kenshi during the camp.

From the U.K., Mr. Stephen Williams (Harrow Branch Master) and Mr. James Woodward (Durham University Branch Master) brought 10 polite kenshi with good attitude and manner. Mr. Williams passed the 5th Dan during the camp, and was given the certificate by Mr. Tsunehiro Arai, WSKO Board Chairperson, on the stage of the last day. After the camp they headed to Hokkaido to see their friends made through Shorinji Kempo to exchange and renew their friendship.
